Life suddenly becomes excitin for the boys of Welton Academy when their eccentric new English teacher, John Keating, appears. He teaches them to „seize the day“ and to enjoy beauty in every aspect of life. Inspired by this enthusiasm, they revive the Dead Poets Society, a secret organization dedicated to poetry. They frequently meet in a hidden cave outside the campus and revel in the recital of all kinds of poetry. Under the influence of their beloved teacher, the boys start learning to be true to themselves, and everything seems to be turning out fine. Then a tragedy happens …

The novel is based on the film written by Tom Schulmann, directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams in the role of John Keating.

Kate Harding: Asking For It

Originaltitel: Asking for It – The Alarming Rise of Rape Culture – and What We Can Do About It

Autor: Kate Harding

Genre: Sachbuch, Englisch

Every seven minutes, someone in America commits a rape. And whether that’s a football star, beloved celebrity, elected official member of the clergy, or just an average Joe (or Joanna), there’s probably a community eager to make excuses for that person.

In Asking for It, Kate Harding combines in-depth research with an in-your-face voice to make the case that twenty-first-century America supports rapists more effectively than victims. Drawing on real-world examples of what feminists all „rape culture“ – from politicos‘ revealing gaffes to instituional failures in higher education and the military – Harding offers ideas and suggestions for how we, as a society, can take sexual violence much more seriously without compromising the rights of the accused.

Weiterlesen

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. Bu as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote … and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Weiterlesen

Alone in the world, Eleanor is delighted to take up Dr Montague’s invitation to spend a summer in the mysterious Hill House. Joining them are Theodora, an artistic ’sensitive‘, and Luke, heir to the house. But what begins as a light-hearted experiment is swiftly proven to be a trip into their darkest nightmares, and an investigation that one of their number may not survive.

Acclaimed es one of the finest ghost stories of the twentieth century and filmed twice as The Haunting, this is an unsettling examination of how fear can make us our own worst enemy.

Weiterlesen
